Brendan has been running around the Stonehenge Landscape for years (Stonehenge is less than a 20-minute run from home!) and has seen it in different lights and seasons thousands of times. He also has a sizeable library of monographs and excavation reports on everything to do with the Stonehenge Landscape and tries to go to as many symposiums and public meetings as possible where the current experts on Stonehenge are speaking, and the rare occasion that an archaeological dig is occurring to go take a look!
Brendan is also a keen ultra and marathon runner and tries to do at least 3/4 each year.

The landscape around Stonehenge is by far best seen at sunrise where the low sunlight casts long shadows and shows up the hundreds of burial mounds and other ancient monuments in the landscape around Stonehenge. : We go if it's bright sunshine or freshly fallen snow! No matter what the weather. In fact, the depths of winter are one of the best times to see Stonehenge and its landscape, the grass is low, and the natural geological processes of freeze and thaw on the chalk landscape are much more apparent. If it's especially wet but not freezing cold you might be lucky enough to see the course of some of the small streams that used to cut across the landscape when the water table was much higher, which probably had a great influence on the builders of Stonehenge in choosing this site.
See the vast 2300 acres of the Stonehenge landscape whilst enjoying a fantastic trail run on many mixed types of trails and open fields. Brendan your guide will talk to you about the context of the whole landscape its many burial mounds and other monuments and keep you up to date with the latest research and publications on the Stonehenge Landscape. We have a number of maps and diagrams to show you during the tour so you can really see where you are standing in the landscape and understand it in context.
The history stretches from hunter-gatherers some 10000 years ago, through the Neolithic and the building of Stonehenge, Bronze Age, Iron Age, roman period, anglo saxon Age medieval times, early modern and the escape of Charles the Second after the Civil War, and even through to the first and second world wars and the almost contemporary history of the Stonehenge Free Festival, Battle of the Beanfield and through to the present day.

Running tours of the Stonehenge Landscape in 3 hours
Choose different types of runs by how far you would like to run or your particular interest.
We aim for the runs to be around 3 hours long and done at a relaxed 30-35 minute 5 km pace, think of it as an ultra-marathon talking pace. However, the runs can be done faster or slower depending on the desire of the runner/runners and how much time we spend stopped talking and explaining different aspects of the landscape at different spots.
The circa three hours that you have is yours to see what you would like to see of the landscape early in the morning devoid of people, different types of runs should be seen as guidelines rather than a definitive list of what we'll run past as with small groups of 1-4 people all within one private group we can be very flexible to tailor to your interests and desired running pace.
Routes also change depending on the weather conditions and whether livestock are in fields or not, there are many different combinations of what your route could be, and almost always a way around if a route is blocked. Treat what you could see on the different length tour examples a guide to what you might like to see on the day and what pace you would like to run at.
The different run lengths below serve as examples of what you might be able to see depending on how far you would like to run.
We love being flexible running around the Stonehenge landscape and are keen to fit in what you would like to see within the three hours.
